LA MUNTANYETA

In 1990 la Muntanyeta was created, an area that holds an important sample of the most important Valencian ecosystems. The rock garden is the only high spot in the Garden, formed by blocks of lime and red stone. A stream runs through it, springing from the heights and running down to form a pond on one of the faces, while on the other there is a dry watercourse. Thus, the former holds plants that are typical of aquatic environments and those that are common to the riverbanks: reeds, yellow irises or canes, as well as other, exotic species like papyrus or “umbrella plants”.

The eastern face represents the Mediterranean forest with specimens like the Holm oaks, violets or butcher’s broom and, the north face holds the maquis, made up of fan palms, kelms oak and lentiscs, among others. In the centre of the rock garden grow dry bushes: rosemary, thyme and lavender. Also to be found growing between the cracks are important native Mediterranean species. What is more, next to the Caseta del Romero (Rosemary House) there is a sample of the sandy shore, holding plants adapted to our coasts and dunes, like sea daffodils, cotton wheat or thistle holly.
