GERMPLASM BANK | INDEX SEMINUM

The Index Seminum is a seed catalogue prepared annually by the Jardí Botànic, listing the seeds available according to the plants it hosts, and which is offered to botanical gardens all over the world with the aim of establishing a free and open exchange. A traditional activity that began in the mid-19th century and has been maintained under the same conditions to the present day. The exchange of seeds and spores constitutes one of the main ways to increase the living collections of botanical gardens, and it can also provide material for the development of research work.

The Jardí Botànic of the Universitat de València published its first Index Seminum in 1862. Currently, it offers a catalogue of seeds and spores (or propagules) collected from the garden’s own living plant collections for exchange between botanical institutions worldwide.

The samples offered are collected from plants grown under open pollination conditions; therefore, it should be taken into account that hybridisation between some of them is possible.

Our institution is committed to supporting the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation and is also concerned with compliance with the provisions established by the CBD through the Nagoya Protocol, relating to access to genetic resources, Convention on Biological Diversity. Therefore, the Jardí Botànic only supplies seeds and other plant materials in accordance with the IPEN Code of Conduct for Botanical Gardens .

The seeds offered in our Index Seminum are not available to private individuals or commercial entities. Our institution maintains the exchange of plant material exclusively for non-commercial uses.

Membership in the IPEN network implies acceptance of its code of conduct and allows the exchange of germplasm with other IPEN members without a prior bilateral agreement. Only IPEN users may request material through the website or by email (bancgerm@uv.es).

Botanical gardens that do not belong to the IPEN network must sign the agreement relating to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), which is available in the attached edition of our Index Seminum. The signature of authorised staff of the botanical garden or of the director of the research line or project is required in cases where the request is for scientific purposes.
